Prairie Crab Apple (Malus ioensis)
Просмотров 86310 месяцев назад
A true native apple indigenous to the Midwestern prairie states, Prairie Crab used to be much more common than it is presently. When most of our Midwestern landscapes were grasslands that had frequent fire return intervals they were more plentiful - but we can help bring them back. Prairie crabs have a shrubby/bushy appearance and make excellent “islands” of cover and shade in old field type ha...
"Wild" Crab Apple (Malus spp.)
Просмотров 93010 месяцев назад
Its no secret that deer absolutely hammer apples and crabapples, and we’ll go as far to say there may not be a more effective “draw and hold” to deer than a big grove of them. However, a big orchard of fancy named varieties can be a rather expensive and time consuming chore for the weekend warrior or gamekeeper to undertake…meaning less time and money spent managing the rest of your property wh...
Southern Crab Apple (Malus angustifolia)
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Southern Crab is indigenous to the southeastern states and one of a very few species of apples that are actually native to North America. Much like many of our native plums, our native crabs are in decline due to ever-changing landscapes and practices. They were more common back when we had more old- field/grassland type habitats that were set back with fire from time to time, as they don’t com...

Swamp Chestnut Oak (Quercus michauxii)
Просмотров 5 тыс.2 года назад
Swamp Chestnut Oak (Quercus michauxii) - Named for the French botanist Andre Michaux, who discovered this stately oak (among many others) back in the 1800’s, the common name refers to where it is found and the shape of the leaves. Don’t let the swamp part fool you…although a heavy drinker, SCO’s won’t tolerate poor drainage or longer periods of flooding, save those spots for Nuttall or overcup ...

The elderberry genus has been in the spotlight quite a bit lately for its medicinal value at helping to stave off sickness. And it’s no snake oil either, as science has proven most of the traditional claims are indeed true. In fact, many medical doctors will recommend the use of elderberry to shorten the duration of colds and flu’s. Their makeup consists of lots of healthy, but hard to pronounc...

In important use for wild-type chickasaw plums is pollination of plum cultivars, especially Chickasaw cultivars and hybrids, many of which are nearly pollen sterile and require chickasaw plum for pollination.

Love what you did here, utilizing a space that would normally be useless fescue for native perrenials that provide food for people and animals, cover for animals, and cools your microclimate like mowed grass wouldnt. Not to mention they are kinda nicer to look at! Recently ive become very interested with the idea of cultivating various native perrenials like Chickasaw Plum, Persimmons, Golden Currant and "donating" them to various similar spots around my city

Although there some oaks that grow much faster than others and will produce acorns relatively early NONE will produce a HEAVY crop enough to make a difference until at least 25 years . Are you willing to wait that long ?There are much better ways to improve habitat in a shorter period of time .

I actually believe the answer to the question about why animals pick this tree over that tree has alot to do with how resiliant that tree is to acorn weevils!! And have noticed first hand that they are becoming more and more of a problem with each passing year. Several years ago you might have a handful of acorns that would have holes out of 100lbs. Not anymore! Now it is at least half if not more will have those buggers in them!! This year is the worst i have ever seen!! If it keeps on and is not addressed soon then oak trees will not have any productive acorns. And the animals won't have any acorns to eat.

I have bought a few trees from you guys. They are healthy ,look good and arrive fast. I have noticed that the very small root system that is developed during the first year growth. Is the problem. If they are planted directly into the ground. , watering is the key. If you live Mike from hunting ground, pray for rain They won’t do well in hot dry weather the first year. I now plant them in containers for the first year. It has improved the survival rate a great amount

Cost? Benefit proved by experiments? Fifty years ago my good friend who owned a nursery sold out because he learned trees can be grown from seed with a mylar funnel shield. Germinate, water once at planting, all done! Old useless clear X-ray squares were shaped into funnels, broad side down, to hold in the moisture, protect from animals, filter out UV.
